Humanetics has developed a new crash test dummy to reflect fatalities among obese

Humanetics which is the world’s leading crash-test dummy producer has developed a obese human stand-in that weighs 273 pounds with a Body Mass Index of 35. This new dummy will cost approx. 500,000 and lasts forever that will help automakers design safer safety systems.

“The fact is that if you’re obese then you’re 78% more likely to be killed in a car crash,” said Chris O’Connor, CEO of Humanetics. “We get fat in our middle range,” he said. “And we get out of position in a typical seat.”

“We’re still testing with a dummy that was created in the ’80s that weighs 170 pounds. It’s not representative of the population, and obviously it’s a much different load on the system,”
