When a vehicle catches fire in a car crash it’s usually caused by a vehicle safety defect. A car fire accident, a car fire death and a car fire explosion all may be grounds for filing a car accident lawsuit against the carmaker. Auto Safety Expert and Car Accident Lawyer Todd Tracy explains why in this video.

Hello this is Todd Tracy with the Tracy Law Firm in Dallas, Texas with another Todd Talks. Today I want to talk with you about the concept that vehicles should never catch on fire following an accident. So why does a vehicle catch on fire following an accident? Well first of all, if the fuel tank is breached because of a rock, because the drive shaft explodes, because the drive shaft actually moves over and contacts the fuel tank; that could cause a hole in the tank which could cause a fire.

The second type of accident that we see when a fire occurs, is when a fuel line actually moves over because the engine has shifted over. There’s usually six to eight inches of extra fuel line space, however, if you get involved in a frontal offset impact; or what’s commonly known as a oblique impact, the engine can shift over 12 inches; and if the fuel lines separate that could cause a fire.

Lastly, we see a lot of impacts where the impact is on the outside of the frame rails, where the batteries are located; and when the impact occurs the battery actually gets contacted; the acid in the battery literally catches on fire and catches the entire engine compartment on fire. If you, a family member, or friend have suffered a traumatic car accident injury or they were killed in an auto accident, there may be grounds for a product liability lawsuit against the car maker. The victim’s or family members of the deceased person may be entitled to significantly more money in damages than just a negligence case about the cause of the accident.

The Tracy Law Firm focuses on “Who Caused The Traumatic Car Accident Injuries or Death” — not who caused the accident.

Whether you were at fault or not in the cause of the accident, car companies are required by federal motor vehicle safety standards to make vehicles that will protect the driver and passengers from catastrophic injuries or death.

  1. My 2014 Ford Fusion spontaneously combusted while driving to work. I was able to get out of the car before it engulfed in flames. There was no accident or catalyst to this fire. While driving to work the engine caught fire and totaled the vehicle. I feel Ford Motor company needs to be held responsible. I have all receipts of any work done to the vehicle ( always by a ford dealership), and video footage of the fire. I believe the fire was caused by a recall that was not performed, despite the fact I brought the vehicle to be fixed. I have proof they did not perform the recall on receipts. Thankfully I’m not injured, however I feel Ford should be held accountable for their neglect.
