Takata Executive Vice President of North America Kevin Kennedy testifies on Capitol Hill in Washington, June 2, 2015, before the House Energy and Commerce subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade. “We deeply regret each instance in which someone has been injured or killed,” Kevin Kennedy, the executive vice president of North America Takata, told a House Commerce and Energy subcommittee today. “We are committed to doing everything in our power to address the safety concerns raised by airbag ruptures.”
In his testimony, Kennedy noted that Takata had increased the production of replacement airbag kits recently. Takata is expected to produce airbag kits at the rate of 1 million per month by September of 2015.
Kennedy also said that the chemical ammonium nitrate would be replaced by other propellant guanidine nitrate gradually as an air bag propellant in Takata.
Consumers are advised not to inspect airbags on their own. They should also not disable them.
The best way to figure out if your airbags is recalled is to locate your vehicle identification number, vin – which can be found on the driver’s side where the dashboard meets the windshield or on the driver’s side door post.
Enter that vin at www.safercar.gov
Without the VIN, consumers cannot find out whether their car is part of the new recall.
