TTLA 2015 – Takata Airbag Issue will jeopardize vehicle safety for next 10 years!

Even had Takata not recalled 34 million frontal airbags for exploding shrapnel into the bodies’ of occupants the airbag was designed to protect, there are numerous airbag shortcomings that will jeopardize vehicle safety for the next ten years.

This paper is by no means an indictment of the safety benefits of airbags. In fact, since Mercedes Benz introduced frontal airbags as a production feature in 1981, frontal airbags have saved thousands of lives each year.

However, numerous safety issues remain that have not been addressed over the last 30 years. This paper will hopefully enlighten the reader on emerging issues that consumers will experience over the next decade that will unfortunately lead to serious injuries and fatalities.

Vehicles have become safer over the last 50 years. However, safety gaps remain that can be remedied. Many of the safety gaps are a direct result of the failure to use airbags when known hazards have existed for decades.

Other safety gaps exist because there was a rush to get the airbag to market.

These safety gaps with airbags will create safety issues for the next decade and even longer if the vehicle industry procrastinates in implementing the safety devices and fixes. Considering the vehicle industries’ past performance, these airbag shortcomings may be around for decades, not just 10 years!
